When Leo & Evelyn Trentadue came to the Alexander Valley forty years ago, the area was known more for prunes and pastures than wine. In keeping with their Tuscan heritage, they replaced most of the fruit trees on their property with wine grapes, keeping the old vines that were already there; many of the varietals they planted then are popular today.

They say that experience is the best teacher. If this is true, then not many other families have more hands on experience in their vineyards than the Trentadues. The Trentadues are hard working, down to earth, Italian -American farmers . . . a refreshing world apart from the wine country’s new wave of landed gentry. Because they are real people of the soil, they respect their land. Without outside help, the Trentadue family worked together to plant their grapes. Two generations of this family continue to be intimately involved with every aspect of grape cultivation.

Sustainable agriculture is not just a buzzword at Trentadue; it’s a way of life. Every possible effort and precaution is taken to avoid the use of unnecessary chemicals. In spring, ladybugs and lacewings are released as a natural form of pest control and weeding is done almost exclusively by hand to minimize the need for herbicides. The Trentadues understand the cycles of nature, and their list of natural alternatives includes a number of innovative techniques.
