Blanca Vintners, located on nationally recognized Red Mountain, is one of Washington's
newest producers. The Red Mountain area is generally regarded as one of the finest
red grape producing regions In the state. The areas sandy loam soils, warmer micro-climate
and day to night temperature variations of 30 to 40 degrees result in vinifera
grapes displaying power, balance and structure.
Terra Blanca began 5 years ago as
the vision of owner/winemaker Keith Pilgrim. Having studied at University of California
- Davis in enology, viticulture and geology back in the 80's, Keith spent over
ten years gathering information on vineyard sites up and down the West coast.
Drawing upon his combined geology/winemaking background, Keith searched to identify
vineyard sites best suited to the varietals he was most interested in growing.
After much exploring and tasting he settled on the Southwestern slope of Red Mountain,
located at the Southernmost end of the Yakima valley. Three hundred acres were
purchased and the first 50 acres planted
The name Terra Blanca, Latin for white earth, is named for the high calcium carbonate
content that whitens soils of our Red Mountain vineyard and helps produce the
incredible depth and structure in the grapes. The first grapes were harvested
from our estate vineyard in 1997. The Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah all
displayed immense concentration and structure for such young vines. Plans are
to continue developing the remaining acreage over the next 5 - 10 years. A portion
of this development will be dedicated to the cultivation and identification of
other varieties and clones that might prosper in the Eastern Washington climate.
The winemaking philosophy at Terra Blanca is fairly simple... Start with high
quality grapes, treat gently, ferment utilizing multiple yeasts, allow for solids
contact to develop flavor profiles and finally rack, fine and filter only as necessary.
Allow the grapes to express their terrior without inundating with excessive new
oak. The resulting wines exhibit balance, depth, complexity and structure.
