first Robert Craig Cabernet Sauvignon (1992 vintage) debuted in 1995 and was enthusiastically
received by consumers and wine reviewers. The Wine Spectator magazine featured
Robert Craig Wine Cellars as one of California's "Hot New Wineries" in June 1996
and Robert was named 1995 "Rookie of the Year" by The Wine News magazine.
In December of 1997, the Robert Craig 1994 Mt. Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon and 1994
Affinity were included in The Wine Spectator's top twenty California Cabernets
and Blends for that vintage.
For over 20 years, Robert Craig has been a leader in the development of mountain
vineyards and the production of wines of great depth and character from hillside
This abiding interest began with the vineyards of Mt. Veeder on the southwesterly
slopes of Napa Valley, where Bob first learned the potential for making superb
mountain Cabernets. During the 1980's, he was instrumental in developing over
300 acres of vineyards on Mt. Veeder and establishing that estate's reputation
for premium-quality grapes. This effort led to the founding of The Hess Collection
winery which Bob directed as president and general manager until 1990. The winery's
distinctive mountain Cabernet Sauvignons earned immediate recognition from the
wine press and consumers. Building upon that success, Bob spearheaded the campaign
to have Mt. Veeder designated as a special appellation district within the Napa
Valley in 1990.
Over the past eight years, Bob has broadened his viticultural interests to include
other Napa Valley appellations, developing a wine style that conveys the unique
personality of Cabernet Sauvignon grapes from outstanding winegrowing districts.
Robert Craig Wine Cellars was established in 1992 with three long-time friends
who support Bob's commitment to producing small quantities of hand-crafted wines.
Limited production allows for careful monitoring and control -- from grape selection
in the vineyards to the final blending. The winery's label features a seal of
assurance that conveys Bob's pledge of quality to each consumer.
From the beginning, Robert Craig Wine Cellars operations have been oriented around
family and friends who often help out in the winery and vineyards. This personalized,
hands-on approach is in keeping with Bob's belief that good wine should be enjoyed
with good friends.
Winemaker Rudy Zuidema joined the winery in 1996, bringing his exceptional talents
and enthusiasm to the winemaking program. He shares Bob's dedication to hands-on,
small-lot winemaking and has a fine background with premium wineries in Napa Valley
and Australia. Bob continues to be involved in wine and vineyard production, while
his wife, Lynn, directs public relations and marketing.
