The Robert Mondavi Winery was founded in I966 by Robert Mondavi and his elder son, Michael. They were later joined by Robert Mondavi's other two children: his daughter Marcia and his son Timothy. It was the family's desire to build a facility for the production of truly world class wines; the family is committed to growing naturally balanced wines of great finesse and elegance that complement and enhance fine food.

As the years went by, the family established itself as the industry's leading innovator with the largest commitment to vineyard and winery research in the premium wine business, the winery continues to expand and upgrade its varietal grape supply and the wines it produces. It is also a leader in sales and marketing. For example, the winery popularized dry-fermented, oak-aged Sauvignon Blanc as Fume Blanc in the late sixties, a move that is now acknowledged as the catalyst for the varietal's growth and recognition in this country.

A facility was purchased in Woodbridge in I979 for the production of California varietal wines. These fine wines, which feature extensive French oak barrel aging, classic varietals and vintage dating, are produced largely from grapes grown in the cool Lodi/Delta region surrounding Woodbridge, and from North Coast and Central Coast vineyards.

In I979, Robert Mondavi Winery also began the production of Opus One in a joint venture with Chateau Mouton-Rothschild. The winery purchased Vichon Winery in OakvilIe, Napa Valley in I985 and Byron Vineyard & Winery in Santa Marcia Valley, Santa Barbara County in 1990. The winery introduced its Robert Mondavi Coastal wines in 1994 and its La Famiglia di Robert Mondavi line of California-grown Italian varietals in 1995. In 1995, the winery also entered into a new joint venture with the Frescobaldi family in Tuscany. In 1996, it began a joint venture with Eduardo Chadwick of Vina Errazuriz in Chile, to produce and market the Caliterra brand worldwide.

The company had an initial public offering in 1993 and sold additional shares in 1995. The family retains control of 92 percent of the voting power. The stock is traded on NASDAQ (MOND).

Throughout the years, the Robert Mondavi family has remained true to their original philosophy and objectives: to produce world class fine wines, to educate the public about wine and its role as the mealtime beverage of moderation, and to promote wine with the arts as an integral part of a balanced lifestyle. In the interest of wine education, Robert Mondavi Winery is the sponsor of wide-ranging programs, including the Great Chefs at the Robert Mondavi Winery, numerous seminars on such subjects as oak aging and viticulture, and the most comprehensive winery tour program in the Napa Valley. Its varied cultural programs include continuous art shows, a Summer Music Festival (celebrating nearly 30 years this annual concert series has become a cherished California wine country tradition) a Festival of Winter Classical Concerts, literary presentations in the winery's Vineyard Room, and in depth audiovisual programs covering topics such as California Wine History, and Wine, Art and Civilization.

All Robert Mondavi family members participate in activities of the winery and its management. Michael Mondavi is President and CEO of the winery. Timothy is Managing Director and Winegrower; Marcia is a Director and Robert is Chairman of the board. Since its founding, the Robert Mondavi Winery has established itself as one of the world's top wineries. There is a firm determination by family members to carry on this tradition of excellence for generations to come.
