The history of Mount Veeder Winery began in the early l860s with the discovery of this premium wine growing region. Like their forefathers in Europe, California's early pioneers associated mountain vineyards with exceptional quality By 1893 six wineries and more than twenty vineyards had been established, and by the turn of the century Mount Veeder was recognized as a producer of some of the finest wines in the Napa Valley.

In l965 Mount Veeder Winery's first vines were planted in a canyon pasture that is now the site of the winery. Since its construction in l973, the small winery has produced outstanding wines from this unique eighty-acre estate whose rugged terrain has permitted only thirty-five acres of vineyards. In I 990 Mount Veeder was officially recognized as a distinct American Viticultural Area within the Napa Valley.

Appellation: Mount Veeder Appellation

Location: Our Mount Veeder Estate is located on the slopes of Mount Veeder on the west side of Southern Napa Valley.

Vineyards: 40 acres

Soils: The steep hillsides with their soil of shale and volcanic ash provide excellent drainage. This lack of moisture retards vegetative growth, producing small berries. The fruit from this vineyard is extremely concentrated and displays intense varietal character.

Elevations: 1,000 to 1,600 feet.

Age of Vines: 1964 -- 1991

Varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Malbec, Chardonnay

Climate: The microclimate of Mount Veeder is quite different from the Napa Valley floor. The vineyard sits high above the fog bank, exposing the vines to the gentle morning sun while the surrounding moun- tains offer protection from the intense afternoon heat.

Vineyard Techniques: Non-irrigation to limit vine growth and berry size, and to concentrate flavors; maximum sun exposure through trellis design; leaf and shoot removal to enhance flavor development and acid balance; non-cultivation practices to mini- mize soil erosion.

Production: 8,000 cases

Class: Estate Bottled Mountain Wines from the Napa Valley

Other wines in our class: Hess Collection, Mayacamas, Cain Cellars, Keenan, Dunn Howell Mountain, Diamond Creek, Kistler
