Focusing our attention on just four varietals - Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Johannisberg Riesling - Freemark Abbey is acclaimed by knowledgeable wine drinkers who understand and appreciate the consistent style, complexity, and ageability of our wines.

The finest grapes from vineyards owned by grower-partners of the winery are selected by the wine maker and then hand picked for Freemark Abbey wines. State-of-the-art equipment and small French oak barrels further express our commitment to quality in wine making. As a final pledge of excellence, the finished wines are held at the winery for extended bottle-aging to ensure superior quality and drink ability at release.

Freemark Abbey's tradition of excellence is now in the hands of talented young wine maker Ted Edwards, who holds both Bachelor and Master of Science degrees from the prestigious Department of Viticulture and Enology at the University of California, Davis. Continuing the classic Freemark style, Edwards uses innovative techniques to enhance the fruitiness, flavors, and varietal character of the wines.

Nighttime hand-harvesting of Chardonnay grapes and careful selection of small Cabernet berries at around 23 Brix are typical of the dedicated practices Ted brings to the classic Freemark wine making style.

In 1981 we launched a unique program of holding back some of our wines and reintroducing them several years after their initial release. This additional bottle-aging at the winery allows wine drinkers to enjoy the elegance and finesse of a fine, mature wine that has been properly collared. Freemark Abbey is dedicated to providing the best possible wines for the enjoyment of our appreciative patrons.

Freemark Abbey obtains its grapes from vineyards owned and operated by grower-partners of the winery, thus assuring a unified commitment to consistency and quality from the vineyard to the consumer. Located in the most highly regarded sections of the Napa Valley, the vineyards are planted to the varietals which are best suited to the area. This matching of varietal to micro-climate results in fruit of excellent quality and varietal character. Since some of the vineyards are situated next to the Napa River while others cling to the sides of the hills surrounding the Valley, each contributes its own special personality to the complexity of the wines.

Freemark Abbey is particularly acclaimed for its superb Cabernet Sauvignon - a Napa Valley premium Cabernet and two vineyard-designated wines. Bosche and Sycamore Cabernets are single-vineyard wines from the famous Rutherford area, known for producing grapes of excellent color and flavor. Their distinctive quality reflects this special region and the unique characteristics of the soil.
