According to Burgundy expert Clive Coates, “Vosne-Romanée is undoubtedly the greatest of all the Cote d’Or communes. Here you will find Pinot Noir at its most profound, elegant and magnificent.” At the pinnacle of the great vineyards of Vosne- Romanée is the handful of Grand Cru vineyard holdings of the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti: Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, Richebourg, Romanée-St.-Vivant, Grands Échezeaux and Échezeaux.

The Domaine as it stands today was brought together by Jacques-Marie Duvault-Blochet approximately a century ago; however, its individual component vineyards have an older history. The prime section, La Romanée-Conti, can count but nine owners in eight and a half centuries. The prime section, La Romanée-Conti, can count but nine owners in eight and a half centuries. In 1869, the aforementioned Monsieur Duvault-Blochet, probably the most important vineyard owner in Burgundy since the French Revolution, became the owner. It was he who constituted most of the present Domaine by acquiring the holdings in Richebourg and both of the Échezeaux climates.

Edmund, the grandfather of current Domaine Co-Director, Aubert de Villaine, became the Director in 1911, and he was succeeded by Aubert’s father, Henri, in 1950. Aubert was raised at the Domaine, enabling him to become intimately familiar with the Domaine’s day-to-day operation before he became involved in its management. Aubert became Co-director of the Domaine in 1974. His goal at the Domaine is to bottle a wine that has had almost no manipulation, but is the result of perfectly balanced, healthy fruit.

The wines of the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, however, do not necessarily show their best virtues shortly after release. As Aubert attests, “Burgundies have many different faces, and there is an evolution of these faces from youth to serenity… They also have a lean, hard period where they go to sleep in the bottle; however, a wine that is difficult in its youth can become very gentle in its old age.” These comments are very much an embodiment of the gentle understatement of the genteel and gracious Aubert de Villaine.
