Cloudy Bay's first release, a 1985 Sauvignon Blanc, created an overnight sensation in Australia and the U.K. Hugh Johnson doesn't split hairs, simply identifying Cloudy Bay as "the top name for Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay" from New Zealand, a sentiment echoed by Robert Parker.

Founder David Hohnen's desire to find the ultimate site for Sauvignon Blanc, and a fortuitous visit by New Zealanders bearing wine, sent him on an exploratory visit to New Zealand, where he met and hired winemaker Kevin Judd. The two set out in search of the perfect site and found it near Blenheim, between the misty mountains depicted on Cloudy Bay's understated label and the bay named by explorer Captain Cook on his maiden voyage. The winery is located in the well-protected and fertile Wairau Valley, at the foot of the Richmond Ranges in the Marlborough viticultural region.

That first vintage was the top-rated wine at the 1986 WINE Magazine Sauvignon Blanc tasting, making it immediately apparent that Hohnen and Judd had struck gold in the Wairau.
