Cain vineyard and winery is a mountain estate perched high above St. Helena in the Spring Mountain District of the Napa Valley. In 1980 the founders, Jerry and Joyce Cain, chose this rugged mountain terrain as the first estate to grow the five principal red Bordeaux varieties. Their dream of producing a red wine that would rival the best in the world has come to life with Cain Five. Jim and Nancy Meadlock, partners of the Cain's and now sole proprietors, continue the stewardship of the vineyards and the winemaking with the release of the first 100% estate bottled Cain Five from the 1990 vintage.

The ranch totals 542 acres of which 84 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot are planted on steep terraces dramatically cut into the hillsides. Here at the crest line of the Mayacamas Range the storms are violent and the sun is intense. Years of back breaking labor have gone into babying our vines to grow in meager soils. The yield in most vintages is small compared to vineyards on the valley floor, but the reward is grapes of uncommon concentration of color, flavor and rich tannins.

Extraordinary wines are essentially made in the vineyards, therefore our winemaking centers on the careful vinification of some two dozen lots from different vineyard locations. Our philosophy of minimal and gentle handling of the wine requires meticulous attention to detail. The greatest influence on the style of Cain Five is the careful blending of the five varieties to craft a superior finished wine. We have also created Cain Cuvee, an alternative style blended from lots that do not fit the Cain Five.
