Great winemakers are like great chefs. They both find high quality ingredients and allow these ingredients to speak for themselves. Each Bonterra wine is an expression of the pure, natural flavors of the grape itself with oak playing the role of a mild seasoning, not a lead role. Bonterra winemaker Robert Blue, whose own roots in Mendocino are deep, believes in producing wines that showcase forward fruit flavors. Bonterra wines reflect a philosophy that winemaking should be non-intrusive - an expression of the organic vineyards in which they’re grown. Blue believes that purity and intensity are paramount.

ORGANIC GRAPE-GROWING FOR PURE FLAVOR
All Bonterra wines are made from 100% organically grown grapes and are certified by the state of California as “organically grown.” Vineyards are farmed naturally - no pesticides, herbicides or synthetic fertilizers are used. Cover crops planted between the rows of vines provide a natural habitat for bad bugs and good bugs, allowing the vine and grapes to flourish. Fertile soil with great vitality is the result. Grapes from these vineyards exude uncommon vibrancy and concentration, giving Winemaker Robert Blue the finest “ingredients” to nurture into wine. Age-old tradition meets the future. A note about sulfites: Bonterra wines are produced using minimal sulfites in order to ensure freshness and prevent oxidation. In California, this is called “organically grown” as explained above, in conjunction with rigorous farming standards. “Organic” wines, on the other hand, are grown organically and produced without the use of any added sulfites. We choose not to do this due to concerns about oxidation and freshness.

BONTERRA GARDEN
The 5-acre Bonterra Garden is located in Hopland, California in Mendocino County and is dedicated to promoting organic farming and celebrating the pure flavors in our wines. The garden exists for sensory enjoyment and education ofr our visitors. We grow a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, herbs, and edible and ornamental flowers without the use of pesticides, herbicides, or synthetic fertilizers. We fertilize the garden using compost made from grape skins leftover from the winemaking process. As in our modern winery and our organic vineyards, we utilize the best of Old World traditions along with new techniques to create a rich and memorable experience.
