The authenticity of Napa Valley lies in the land and the people who farm it. Blessed by two mountain ranges, with a strong coastal influence, this narrow valley has proven to produce vineyards that are the hallmark of California’s great wines. The soil is unrivaled for grape growing. The beauty of the valley is breathtaking. A few of the families that originally settled in the valley are still vibrant today. Van and Betty Ballentine are among a small cluster of winery owners who can claim nearly a 100 year old family history in Napa Valley.

We feel that the soils and vineyard location are the foundation of great wines. We tend to each vineyard, vine, and variety in the best possible situation. Our goal is to achieve the proper balance on the vine that will yield the highest quality grape and resulting wine.

Ballentine Vineyards focus solely on red varietals: Zinfandel, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Syrah. Each vineyard supports our belief that it is vital to grow only those varieties that are best suited to particular aspects of the land; soil, exposure and climate. The grapes are all 100% estate grown on 110 acres, from three distinct vineyards. Each vineyard is personally managed by Van.

Our winemaker, Bruce Devlin's, philosophy on winemaking is to keep a pure varietal expression. He believes in blending for better complexity and balance while remaining true to the source of the grapes (the vineyard) and the raw material (the varietal). Bruce has a hands on approach to winemaking, and spends most of his time in the cellar handcrafting each and every wine.
